Orthoceras is an extinct cephalopod that lived 350-400 million years ago in the shallow seas of present-day Morocco (at the site of Erfoud). The name means straight horn, in reference to its characteristic long, straight and conical shell. The petrified shell of this animal is preserved in black limestone. The shape of the mineral copies the shape of the animal. It has an elongated shape with a smooth and shiny surface.
